Dr. David Décary-Hétu

Assistant Professor

School of Criminology

Université de Montréal

Prof. Décary-Hétu has a degree in criminology from the Université de Montréal. His first position was a Senior Scientist position at the École des sciences criminelles of the Université de Lausanne. His current position is an Assistant Professor at the École de criminologie of the Université de Montréal. His thesis focused on the impact of the Internet on crime as well as the adaptation of offenders to the Internet. Prof. Décary-Hétu has since continued his research on online illicit markets and is now particularly interested in cryptomarkets, 2nd generation online illicit markets. He has developed the DATACRYPTO tool that he uses to collect large amounts of information on the Internet and the darknet. His research goals are to better understand the structure of markets and actors who participate in them as well as to understand the performance in the context of online illicit markets. To achieve these objectives, Prof. Décary-Hétu uses a quantitative approach that takes advantage of big data, data mining and social network analysis. The results of his research, funded by both the provincial and federal governments, have been published in journals such as the Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, have been presented at numerous conferences and have been disseminated to a wide audience in a number of interviews with the media.
